Blush & Bashful: Winter Wedding Inspo

If you think winter whites or rich reds and greens are the only two ways to go about a winter wedding, think again.

Cascade Floral Wholesale had the pleasure of participating in a cold-weather wedding shoot recently that left us swooning. The signature color? Blush. It’s a palette that always feels fresh and just a touch vivid, full of warmth and yet cool enough to blend in with a stark wintry scene. Just a shade shy of rosy, blush offers the kind of softness that’s perfect for layering, especially when it comes to flowers. Luckily, a variety of them come in the shade.

Blush signals that spring, while seemingly far off, is ever on the horizon. A mounded bouquet of roses is a delicate accessory to a sweeping gown and a sweeping of snow. Build with Bombastic and La Perla roses.

A glittering beaded bodice is all the sparkle you need. A clutch of pale pink and creamy flowers brings dimension to the bridal look. Craft the perfect bouquet with Quicksand and White O’Hara roses.

You can easily create this dreamy effect using one of our Vintage Blush combo collections, which come in standard and luxury mixes. A rich variety of florals—among them lilies, rose, waxflower, carnations, protea and hydrangea—allows you to create bouquets and other groupings that elaborate on a blush color theme.

Easy Floral Decor Ideas: Cake Edition

One of the freshest ways to present your wedding cake is with fresh flowers. And if you’re sourcing from us here at Cascade Floral Wholesale, you’ll have plenty of pretty petals to work with. Even if your cake is styled to the hilt with frosted florals, the fresh kind can introduce more texture and interest. Before you decorate, remember to select flowers that aren’t toxic (you can find a good list of edible ones here), and make sure they’ve been trimmed and washed. Once you’ve done your due diligence, you’re ready to DIY to your heart’s content. Here’s how:

Keep It Simple

Pull one or two statement flowers from the bridal bouquet or table flowers to adorn your cake. Nestle here and there in between layers, or top with a flourish of blooms and greens. A minimal approach allows the cake work to shine but also connects its look to the overall design of your wedding. The pink and white wedding shoot (above) was a compilation of hard work by Lloyd Photographers, Simply Sweet Cupcakes, EVENTful Moments, Champagne and Chalk and Flora D’Amore Floral Artistry. The following was a winter photo shoot by Amy Lewis Photography, EVENTful Moments, Hey-Sweets, CORT Party Rentals and Flora D’Amore Floral Artistry at Hidden Meadows in Snohomish, WA.

Compose A Small Scene

Cupcakes and smaller confections are a popular alternative to the traditional layer cake when it comes to modern weddings. These smaller goodies may not be able to support a big flower like a peony or a rose, but they look just divine when studded with teensy petals and herbs. A sprig or two of one of your smaller bouquet or table flowers is all you need to create a magical-looking tray of goodies.

Crown Your Cake

Creating floral crowns for your wedding? You might as well garland your cake, too. A simple circle of greenery set off by a few soft flowers lends an earthy. organic vibe to even the most elegant of cakes.

Make It About The Flowers

Forgo iced flowers, frosting, or detailed cake decoration altogether in favor of flowers. Here, the florals do all of the work, wrapping up the sides of a simple white cake. This look is perfect for a garden, greenhouse, or botanical-themed wedding, where the emphasis is on natural beauty.

Winter Wedding Flowers That Will Warm Your Heart

Winter’s wedding palette can be many things: rosy and rich, flecked with the seasonal holiday colors and textures, or composed and serene, as peaceful as a walk through the snowy woods. It’s the latter look we’re featuring today, via a breathtaking styled shoot that reflects just how gorgeous a winter wedding can be.

With a little help from our Classic White Luxury Mix, you can fill your wedding with florals that provide layers of texture (think white roses, ranunculus, drifts of hydrangea–you get the picture). Cedar and ilex berries are the perfect counterpoint to the softness of these flowers, and greens like silver dollar eucalyptus and evergreen are always a fetching way to round out the effect. Except, of course, when they are the main event.

Here, boughs of eucalyptus and other greens cascade over the backs of bridal seating, just a few buds tucked in for interest. A dusting of snow on the ground makes a great ceremony runner.

The bouquet is an enchanting mix of ranunculus, berries, evergreen and more, uniting the woodsy backdrop with the delicate lace of the wedding gown. This luxe mix of flowers can be both glamorous (note the fur stole) and elemental, as if the bride gathered up this bundle on a romantic walk outdoors.

Earthy touches on a reception table continue the scene indoors, lit by warm candles and accented with gold plating and ornate candelabra. A trail of greens and flowers displayed naturally in the middle of the table allows guests to see each other and doesn’t compete with the fragrance of the meal. Simple is best, in this case, but the effect is no less a statement.

The Scoop On Poinsettias

National Poinsettia Day came and went last week, but let’s face it, poinsettias rule all of December. From the bright and bold variety to the more pastel petaled, this is one plant that is inextricably tied to the season.

Before we start talking color, let’s set one thing straight: The poinsettia flower is really a type of leaf called a bract. The real flower is that bunch of teensy green or yellow buds clustered in the center there, around which the bracts congregate. That’s where the pollen lives, enabling these beautiful bloomers to propagate. Want to impress you next-door neighbor? Refer to the flower part by its real name: cyathia.

Bracts come in a variety of colors, from blazing red to rosy pink to white as a hillside of snow. As if that’s not enough, often the bracts are flecked with various colors, giving them a marbled effect. But how do they come to be all of those colors?

First, a little backstory. Poinsettias are native to southern Mexico, and it was the first U.S. ambassador there, a one Joel Roberts Poinsett, who in 1828 spotted them growing along the road. The physician and botanist sent some clippings home to South Carolina, and the rest is history. Thanks to the cultivation efforts of Poinsett and others after him, we now have over 100 varieties of the shrub, and it’s the highest-selling potted plant in the country.

Which brings us to their unmistakable look, long associated with the holiday season. In their native Mexico, poinsettia were used by the Aztecs to dye fabric. They were always used in religious ceremonies because red was considered a holy color. Ironically, it’s the darkness that makes these shrubs so bright. The process is called photoperiodism, which is a natural phenomenon for certain plants and animals to the length of day or night. In the case of the poinsettia, 12-14 hours of darkness for weeks at a time will cause the bracts to change color. Today, we coax poinsettia to bloom in December, starting the process in October.

By the way, that stunning scarlet version? It’s official name is “Prestige Red,” though it has also been referred to as both lobster and flame-leaf flower.

Make A Fall-To-Winter Centerpiece

DIY Fall Flower Bouquet

It’s not hard to create a gorgeous fall-to-winter centerpiece that will set the tone in your dining room and wow your guests this season. In fact, it’s fun. There’s nothing like being able to point to your centerpiece and take credit for making it, along with the turkey, yams, and stuffing. You’ll need a few basic items to get started, a good clean working space, and a riot of richly-hued flowers, of course.

In this quick tutorial, we’ve used peach roses, marigold, protea, eucalyptus, red berries and Japanese maple, all seasonal signatures that bring a lot of warmth to the table. Otherwise, all you need is a floral foam block, floral scissors, and a container of water big enough to accommodate your block. Choose your favorite vessel (we’ve gone with a simple, long and low holder) and make sure that your block fits inside it (if not, cut to scale).

Once you’ve sufficiently soaked your block, set it into your vessel. Then, place your greens and stems to define the scale of your design. Place your biggest flowers first. Remember that your centerpiece will be viewed from all angles of the table, so distribute for symmetry and balance. To create space, remove excess leaves. Add in your most colorful, vibrant flowers to really give your arrangement a lot of visual appeal. Pop in your berries and leaves near the end, wherever you need a little extra interest and texture. Use the eucalyptus to further frame and define your design. Voila! You’re done.

Fall’s Rustic Textures, Starring Mums, Protea & More

Fall is just around the corner, and with it come florals in rustic colors and textures that will carry us through the season. This is a busy time for fundraisers, galas, school festivals and other events where seasonal florals like sunflowers and mums really set the tone. Cascade Floral Wholesale is giving planners, florists and anyone who wants to get their hands on some harvest-hued flowers a peek at what’s on offer.

Mum’s The Word

We can’t imagine fall without glorious, vibrant mums, which come in several varieties and colors. Beautiful on their own or in a mix, a spiky, layered spider mum in Pantone’s Color of the Year, Ultra Violet, provides an enticing pop of color.

Spray mums in that signature gold palette are buildable (can you have too many?). This is an approachable flower that offers that autumnal feel and yet never looks overdone.

A Major Statement Flower

Protea, a South African bloom, has been blossoming from bridal bouquets for the last couple of years. A single bold protea, with its arresting center and exotic appeal, lends a lot of interest to a floral design. A king protea helps create an arrangement of unusual beauty and dimension, bringing life to a tablescape or entryway piece. Combined with grasses, greens and equally dynamic natural elements, this flower delivers tons of texture.

Teensy But Textured

No less impactful than a king protea, the scabiosa pod is one of those flowers that will make you lean in to get a closer view. These are also known as pincushion flowers, which makes sense, given their tight little knot of striking, delicate blooms (or seed pods). At their center, a dark star expands, while green leaves wick around the base. We love the neutral counterpoint scabiosa make to a design of richly-colored flowers, as well as their graceful height.

Fall is the perfect occasion to design with texture in mind, and the layering possibilities seem endless. Tuck in some curly willow for a spare, haunting look or stack large-stem sunflowers in rustic buckets for an Indian summer feel. The season’s florals and other natural elements are all about enchanting the eye and setting the mood.
