Pink and Yellow Roses in a Vase

June’s Flower: The Rose

As one of the most symbolic flowers around, with a rich history of meaning and iconic showings, the Rose is a flower preferred by many. This month, we celebrate roses in all their glory, and for good reason! June is National Rose Month, a time for romance, weddings, summer evenings and bright sunny skies. June has arrived and along with it, roses in every form. The floral experts at Cascade Floral Wholesale celebrate the rose with you by offering some history and symbolism, as well as a few tips and ideas about sending roses this month.

History of National Rose Month

Roses have long been held in high esteem by our nation’s leaders. In 1986, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the Rose as the National Floral Emblem of the United States of America. He made this proclamation, of course, in the Rose Garden of the White House, created by First Lady Ellen Wilson in 1913. The Rose Garden is still used today by presidents for press conferences, bill signings and diplomatic meetings. But the first president to grow and breed roses himself was George Washington. And now we celebrate this illustrious flower for a full month during the season when spring is in full bloom and roses are everywhere we look.

Symbolism of Roses

Throughout history, roses have symbolized more sentiments than any other flower. Not only does each color have a special meaning (and in some cases, multiple meanings!), but sending just one rose can mean something totally different than sending a bouquet of roses! For example, red roses are symbolic of love, but a single red rose is considered more alluring than a full bouquet of a dozen roses. Pink roses symbolize innocence and purity, while yellow roses could mean friendship, but also jealousy. In the Renaissance era, roses were sent by individuals to communicate specific messages of love, fidelity, loyalty, friendship and grief. Today we find roses standing for honor, faith, love and gratitude.

Sending Roses this Month

There are plenty of great reasons to send roses this month! For June birthdays, roses are excellent gifts. There are more weddings- and therefore, anniversaries- in June than any other month, so roses make an excellent gift on these occasions, as well! But we can also send roses to long-distance loved ones we’re missing right now, to celebrate the onset of summer and to show gratitude to teachers as well as congratulations to graduates as the school year wraps up.
