Choose Vintage Composite and Classic Biedermeier Bouquets for your Wedding

Choosing your wedding bouquet can be a tough decision. While you want everything to be perfect, you may also be striving for a signature look, something unique or a design that encompasses your history together. For bringing a historical touch to your special day, the floral experts at Cascade Floral Wholesale recommend choosing a composite or Biedermeier bouquet. The opportunities for creativity and unique design are vast with both of these styles. Plus, they connect us to periods in history that may be worth bringing with you as you and your partner step into the future.

History: The oversized bouquets were mainly popular in the 1940s and 1950s and typically comprised of gladioli petals or rose petals, fashioned in a concentric circle to make one giant flower. Also called Malmaison roses, fantasy flowers, or rose Duchesse, the most commonly used name for composite bouquets is glamelia, since the gladioli petals formed a flower resembling a camellia.

How: Originally, these flowers were formed by attaching each petal to a wire to form a simple stem. The stems were then brought together to form the overall look of one enormous bloom. The process was tedious and painstaking, but now florists typically use a special glue or foam base to attach the petals and form the final product. Often an actual flower of the variety used to form the petals rests at the center of the design.

Trends: If you want to include vintage elements in your wedding, a composite or glamelia bouquet is a perfect choice. Choose flowers with hardy petals like orchids and lilies for a lasting bouquet. Rose petals can work, too, though your bouquet may not have the staying power as with less delicate blooms. While the beauty of a composite bouquet absolutely stands alone, your florist can also embellish the design with accents like crystals, pearls or other special elements.

Biedermeier Bouquets

History: Named for the artistic style that bloomed among the artistic middle class in 19th century Europe, the general term “Biedermeier” typically refers more specifically to a particular style of interior design found in Germany at this time. The emphasis was generally on clean lines and utilitarian purposes. Today, we see the clean lines represented by the striped effect of layered flowers in a Biedermeier bouquet, while the utilitarian component is satisfied by including multiple varieties of flowers in one beautiful design.

How: Biedermeier bouquets feature a layering of different types and colors of flowers in a concentric, symmetrical design. The effect is stripes of colors and textures that will delight you and your wedding guests tremendously.

Trends: If you want to include several different types of flowers in your wedding, a Biedermeier bouquet might be your favorite option. Bring everything together in a fanciful design. This trend will look best at highly artistic and creative weddings, amidst other energetic and exciting designs. There is no specific size requirement for these bouquets, so larger ones can be made to fill open spaces, like in an open reception hall.

Your wedding bouquet will be a lasting element of your wedding day. It will be featured in most, if not all, of your photographs, and it’s likely you’ll choose to preserve the bouquet as a memento long after the ceremony is over. So choosing the right design that fits your style and personality perfectly is important to your overall day.
